I was going to go see her new movie, 'Friends With Benefits' this weekend but then I realized I saw it a few months ago except it had a completely different title: 'No Strings Attached' and she looked a lot like Natalie Portman! ; ) I'm wondering why Hollywood let this happen? Two movies about the same thing and both released within six months of each other? Don't these industry types talk to one another?? So I decided I'm going to see "Crazy, Stupid Love" with Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling instead. Hilarity and Hotness combined.

Annnnyways, I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! I took today off so I get an extra long weekend that I'm really looking forward to. I have a wedding to attend tomorrow and the rest of the weekend I'll be bumming around and probably eating a lot of ice cream if the weather is hot. Did I tell you Dairy Queen is within walking distance of my house? Trouble I tell ya.

Those of you who have been reading my blog for awhile know that I love me some bargains! When I see the word "sale" my heart starts palpitating, my eyes start bulging out of my head and I break into a cold sweat. It comes as no surprise that I love shopping and I love the satisfaction I feel when I get a great deal on something, anything - it can be clothes, shoes, gas, movie tickets, milk, bagels, whatever, I feel a great sense of achievement when I know I've saved money because that means I can buy more. Unless you have a disposable income and/or your last name is Shriver I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way? I am proud to say everything I'm wearing in this outfit post (minus the accessories) I got on sale for more than 50% off! And that makes me one happy lady ; ). I had never shopped at Free People before but have always admired their clothes so when I came upon the store in Scottsdale on vacation I let out a little yelp and headed straight towards this beautiful white blouse. It was game over when I saw it was marked down from $109 to $52.00.

Amy Winehouse: Condolences

We are here for a short time on this earth.  So, unfortunately we must sometimes say: “good bye”.  The topic is never easy but here are two common language styles.

Language Style

 Demi Moore: "Truly sad news about Amy Winehouse. My heart goes out to her family.”

Usher:  "I'm so sad to hear the horrible news of Amy Winehouse's death. I'm so happy I knew you Amy...we'll miss you!!"

The first sentences of Demi and Usher are common expressions for beginning to express sympathy. 

It is truly sad news about Amy Winehouse.

I’m so sad to hear the horrible news of Amy Winehouse’s death. 

The word ‘truly’ can be interchanged with ‘so’.  These words simply emphasize the person’s feeling of sadness.  For example:

I’m truly sad to hear the horrible news of Amy Winehouse’s death. 

However, ‘so’ can’t be interchanged with ‘truly’ despite the same meaning. (Native English speaking patterns can be tricky)

The easiest word to use that can be interchanged in both cases is ‘very’.  ‘Very’ has the same meaning as ‘truly’ and ‘so’.  

For example:

It is very sad news about Amy Winehouse.

I’m very sad to hear the horrible news of Amy Winehouse’s death. 

Use the word you like best.  Most native speakers don’t think about it.  However, in American English ‘truly’ has more of a formal feeling because it is found more in writing than speaking.  But in the case of someone’s death, people often use more formal words to express their feelings.

The second sentences of Demi and Usher are where they personalize their message.

Demi: My heart goes out to her family.

Usher: I'm so happy I knew you Amy...we'll miss you!!

Although both sentence are more personal in nature, the ideas are quite common in condolences.

Condolences Speaking Pattern

 Examples:

________ sad news about ________. My heart goes out to her family.

1.Truly sad news about (person’s name). My heart goes out to her/his family.

2.Very sad new about (person’s name). My heart goes out to his/her family and friends.

I'm ________ sad to hear the horrible news of ________ death. I'm so happy I knew you ________....we'll miss you!!

3.  I’m so sad to hear the horrible news of (person’s name) death. I'm so happy I knew you (person’s name)...we'll miss you!!

4. I’m truly sad to hear the horrible news of (person’s name) death. I'm so happy I knew you (person’s name)...we'll miss you!!

5.  I’m very sad to hear the horrible news of (person’s name) death. I'm so happy I knew you (person’s name)...we'll miss you!!

And Then There Was Sun

After days and days of never-ending rain and miserable cold weather, the sun finally decided to peek its pretty little head out and grace us with its presence. It was about time because I was getting ready to sell my belongings and move to Mexico to live on the beach. Seriously. We've had such a crappy and pathetic summer this year, those of my readers who live in Alberta know what I'm talking about! Anyways, this is what I wore yesterday to run some errands and pick up a Skor Blizzard (drools) at Dairy Queen for myself and a vanilla cone for D. which I bribed him with in exchange for taking my pictures. Yes, sometimes I have to do that. Especially when I pull him away from his precious video games. I bought these pants in the states at a Saks Fifth Avenue outlet in Phoenix. I had been searching for the perfect pair of reasonably priced, non-J Brand cargo pants and was stoked to have find these for $30.00. Ahhh, I love outlets! Speaking of outlets I picked up the fedora I'm wearing for $10.00 at the Roots outlet in Edmonton. Score!

I hope you all had a nice weekend! Besides enjoying the beautiful weather on Sunday, I attended a wedding shower for D.'s sister and a stagette for a friend of mine, both on Saturday. The shower was quite tame but the Bachelorette party included lacy underwear, penis straws and lots of shots of alcohol. Good times, good times ; ).

My Trip to the Mountains

Last weekend D. and I took a little vacation with some friends down to beautiful Banff, Alberta which is a very well-known national park four and half hours away from where we live. I am always in awe of the amazing views and scenery when I visit the Canadian Rocky Mountains and feel so lucky to live so close to a place tourists travel hundreds of thousands of miles from around the world to see.

The highlight of my trip was white water rafting down the Bow Valley River. I had never done it before and it was a blast! About ten minutes in we pulled into shore, got out of our rafts and climbed to the top of a cliff. We had the option of jumping off an 8' cliff and/or a 25' cliff. I decided against both because a) I didn't feel like dying that day and b) I thought it would be too cold for me jumping into glacier water (even though we were wearing wet suits) and c) to be honest with you I thought the chilly temperature would make me want to pee inside my suit and that would just be awkward and gross. Plus I admit I was a wee bit scared. Just a 'lil. So I hung back while watching everyone else jump, thinking, "I hope I don't regret this."

When there were only two people left to jump off the 25' ledge (my two girlfriends, who were jumping off that cliff for the SECOND time) I told myself, "SCREW IT, JUST DO IT!" like Nike and I climbed over the rocks to the top and jumped! It took me four minutes to actually do it. My friends said my legs were shaking so badly that I kind of just stepped off the cliff and my other leg collapsed underneath it. I don't care how I did it I was just happy and proud that I did! The water was ice cold but so refreshing! It was AWESOME! And I kept my wet suit dry on the inside, if you're wondering. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures rafting because I didn't have a water-proof camera. Boo!

Sorry I don't have an outfit post from Banff. I basically lived in my jeans, hoodies and lulu's all weekend which was pretty boring. I promise I'll be back next week with a proper outfit post!

Speaking Style

Today’s theme continues from last week’s Blog about the type of guy or girl we would date; or wouldn’t date.  Last week was about dating preferences.  This week’s language focus is similar but used when we are talking about being with someone more permanently. To refresh your memory here is last week’s conversational speaking pattern:

Avril: Boys with guitars  …they’re really fucking hot.  I could never date a preppy guy. 

Avril gives us her ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’ regarding guys.  This gives us lots of information to continue talking to her. For example we might answer, “Yeah, I love guys with guitars too.  There awesome!” or “ No way.  I love preppy guys.  I think they are more mature.”

In today’s natural language focus, Angelina shares with us the type of man she would like to be with in a future long-term relationship.  The language she uses is very subtle and casual:

Angelina: The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be __________.

The expression ‘the kind of man’ is common and casual.  The sentence: “ I could be with one day would have to be…” is a possible future that almost has a fairy tale feeling to it.   The next part of her language emphasizes her ideal man for a long-term relationship:

"… an amazing father, a compassionate, strong, independent individual.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today."

As you can see, Angelina’s passion comes out in the use of several adjectives and then the secondary sentence. The adjectives are descriptive but precise and the secondary sentence shows how she wants to be affected by her next partner in a direct way.  Angelina wants a great father for her son, and a compassionate, strong, independent man in her life.  Moreover, this person must be all of these things in order to affect her to become a better person. 

Angelina’s language pattern flows so nicely.  Her passion and ideas are propelled clearly without sounding arrogant.  She allows us to see past the outside beauty and into the sensitive but intelligent, beautiful person inside her.  This is the type of language that attracts a great partner to the beginning of a wonderful relationship.  Angelina’s language has that female X-factor or irresistible magnetism that parallels her physical traits. 

Now, to bring out your own personal magnetism…or catch guys like Brad Pitt or anybody else you want!

Angelina’s Conversational Speaking Pattern

The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be __________.  I want somebody who ___________.

Some examples to get you started:

1. The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be strong but sensitive.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today.

2. The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be intelligent, funny, and love dogs.  I want somebody who understands me.

3. The kind of woman I could be with one day would have to be strong, independent, and loving.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today.

4. The kind of woman I could be with one day would have to be intelligent, warm, and a cat lover.  I want someone who is also my best friend.

Review: Cle de Peau's $70 Concealer

A couple of weeks ago in this post I mentioned I bought a tube of Cle de Peau full coverage stick concealer in the states when I was on holidays there in May. I had been wanting to purchase it for years after hearing celebrities and their makeup artists rant and rave about it but the hefty price tag ($70.00!) and the fact that I couldn't acquire it locally dissuaded me from taking the plunge. But, during my trip I came upon a Nordstrom's in Scottsdale and decided to suck it up and buy it to see what the hype was all about. Who cares if I couldn't go out for dinner and drinks that same night because I was now broke?? If it made my purply/dark under-eye circles completely disappear than it was DAMN WELL WORTH IT!!

Here's a swatch. The woman at the counter chose 'Ivory' for me, which is the lightest of the four shades they carry. The concealer is very creamy. She suggested warming it up with my finger for about 10 seconds before applying it.

I used GM Collin eye cream underneath. I live in an extremely dry climate so I have to wear a hydrating eye cream every day. That's probably why it looks a little wet in the photo on the right.

I compared Cle de Peau to MAC Pro Longwear which is what I normally use. You can see Cle de Peau gives a bit more coverage than the MAC concealer.

So what do I think? Cle de Peau's concealer gives me great coverage and lasts longer than others I've tried in the past. It stays on ALL day, blends easily, melts into the skin, and successfully covers up dark circles, blemishes and imperfections. (Bet you couldn't tell I had a couple of zits on my forehead in the above photo! Or maybe you could?) A little goes a long way, the amount of concealer that comes in a tube will last me at least six months. The con's: It's expensive at $70.00 a pop, it can look a bit cakey, it seeps into my fine lines (but I find all concealers do, even with a primer) and did I mention it's $70.00?! Would I buy it again? I prefer a liquid concealer, like MAC Pro Longwear because I find they're easier to apply. (Plus Pro Longwear is more than $50.00 cheaper!) Cle de Peau didn't make my dark circles magically disappear like I hoped it would but it did do a nice job concealing them which is what a concealer is supposed to do. I found it gave me the best coverage and stayed put the longest out of any concealer I have ever used. So yes, if I could afford it every once in awhile and I could purchase this concealer in my province I would buy it again!

Avril has a young, vibrant style of casual conversation.  In this case, she is asked about the type of guys she likes.  She gives a good strong answer with her ideal type and what she doesn’t like.  In some cultures, we might avoid the part about what we ‘don’t like’ but in English it comes across naturally.

Avril also uses common expressions to make her feelings vibrant or passionate.  Speaking with passion makes people want to listen to you.  Let’s change the question and answer expressions into direct English with the same meanings. 

Question: What type of boys are you 'into'?

                   = What type of boys do you 'like'? (same meaning)

Avril: Boys with guitars …they’re really 'fucking hot'.  I could     

           never date a 'preppy guy'.    

           = Avril: Boys with guitars …they’re really, 'really 

              attractive and sexy'.  

              I could never date a guy who wears 'neat, classic

              clothing with a preparatory school style'. 

              (same meaning)

  

Casual Slang Word Summary

1. 'fucking' = very

2. 'hot' = really attractive and sexy

3. 'preppy guy' = a guy who wears young but classic clothing that is neat and well put together.  The clothing is usually expensive.  This fashion style comes from clothing designed after expensive preparatory school uniforms.  Modern preppy fashion can be seen in the clothing line by ‘Tommy Hilfiger’.

Now let’s put these ideas into practice.  Below is the main speaking pattern to try out in your next English encounter with a native speaker. Also, don’t forget the slang!

Conversational Speaking Pattern

Boys with ________...they're really fucking hot.  I could never date a ________.

1. Boys with snowboards …they're really fucking hot.  I could never date a guy who doesn’t like the mountains in winter.

2. Boys with muscles …they're really fucking hot.  I could never date a skinny guy.

Girls with ________...they're really fucking hot. I could never date a ________.

3. Girls with tattoos   …they're really fucking hot.  I could never date a boring girl.

4. Girls with long hair …they're really fucking hot.  I could never date a girl with short hair.

Pink It Was Love at First Sight

This is my new vintage (isn't that an oxymoron? new/vintage?) polyester blouse I purchased at the Bamboo Ballroom Blogger Night last May. As soon as I laid eyes on it I knew it had to come home with me, much like most of the clothes in my closet! I paired it with my wide-legged, flared MiH jeans I got at Nordstrom Rack in the states. They have become my favorite pair of jeans. Of all-time. They're the perfect cut and length and make my legs look longer than they are. I highly recommend them!

Did you have a good weekend? The weather was crappy here for the most part so I spent a lot of time inside. Even when we did get a bit of sun, like when I was able to take these outfit pics, the mosquitoes were nasty, nasty, nasty. So I ran errands, went shopping, caught a movie ('Horrible Bosses' which was actually quite funny) and pampered myself with a much-needed pedicure. Pink toes ; ). Oh, and I ended my weekend watching 'Marley and Me' on T.V. which was a very bad idea. D. couldn't even watch it and I turned into a big, bawling, slobbering, snotty mess even though I had seen it before. When it was over I found Kitty and hugged her close and gave her a few kisses on top of her head. What can I say? I have a  huge soft spot for animals. Like this little guy:

Okay he's not so little. Extremely large rabbits and hares are nothing new to our neighborhood, I spot at least three of them every day but this one has made a habit of settling comfortably into our grass (which really needs to be cut, I know!) every evening for the past month or so. Kitty watches him intently from her window perch. He doesn't let me get too close yet but hopefully that will change and I'll be able to pet him soon. Then he can move in with us! HA! D. would just love that I'm sure.

Will and Kate in My Province!

Yesterday was supposed to be a "rest day" for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on Day 7 of their Royal Tour of Canada but instead they made a quick detour and traveled to the fire-ravaged Slave Lake, which is only two and half hours from where I live in Edmonton. Last May, the devastating wildfire destroyed one third of the town, forced 7000 people to flee their homes and caused approximately 700 million dollars in damages. Many people lost everything in the fire. Since I was in bed sick yesterday with the flu I was able to watch the live coverage of the royal couple's much-anticipated visit to Slave Lake and it warmed my heart seeing how happy it made the residents being in their presence, shaking their hands, talking with them and taking pictures. I even saw Kate give someone a hug (much to the dismay of her security guard!) I wish I could have been there to witness it all in person. The couple's visit certainly gave the people of Slave Lake a much-needed morale boost and lifted their spirits. I'm sure they'll be talking about it for years! Here are some pictures from their tour:

More than 3000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse and (if they were lucky) shake hands with the royal couple. I heard that the crowd sang 'O Canada' a couple of times before Will and Kate arrived : ).

In the gymnasium of Northern Lakes College, Will and Kate met with 50 families who lost their homes in the fire to talk about how they plan on moving forward and rebuilding their lives.

Because this is a fashion blog, this post wouldn't be complete without mentioning what Kate was wearing yesterday! She looked elegantly chic in her white ruffled blouse, a navy one-button Canadian-designed Smythe blazer (the same one she wore on Day 4 of the tour), her favorite J Brand 811 Mid-Rise jeans, which she wore three days in a row (atta girl!), a Linda Camm belt and L.K. Bennett wedges.
