Photopalooza from Fukuoka! Or: The Search for Starbucks

When we left off yesterday--which for Tara was already the tomorrow that we’re having today so she was bummed that there was no morning blog to read but then she realized that’s because she was all Back to the Future there in Fukuoka, having a morning that hadn’t happened here yet--our travelers had not yet arrived in Fukuoka. And BTW have I mentioned how hard that whole 14-

8 Inch Heels Anyone??

I know, right?? My back goes out of alignment just looking at them. When I saw these on Glamour.com this morning my jaw dropped. These are Christian Louboutin's donated by the designer to the English National Ballet for their fundraising auction tonight in London. I don't think anyone could walk in them, not even Lady Gaga but they would sure look pretty on a mantle! To read more about these babies you can click here.

American Makeup Haul

I know I'm a little late in posting this because I bought these products in May but better late than never, right? In addition to buying too many a bunch of clothes and accessories on my vacation in Arizona last month, I took full advantage - that's FULL advantage as in my Visa card was sore when I got home from my trip - of the Canadian/U.S. exchange rate and bought some cosmetics as well because everything was cheaper there. How could i resist? ; )  Here's what I got:

MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in C2 - This is a staple in my makeup kit, a must-have. I've been using this since I was a teenager, after my cousin introduced it to me. I love how it's a powder and foundation in one. It gives great coverage, doesn't cake, covers all my imperfections and stays on longer than other powders I've tried in the past.

NARS Illuminator in Copacabana - this is my first time using a highlighter and I love it! I mix it in with my foundation or tinted moisturizer and it gives me a nice, healthy glow. I'm hooked.

Hard Candy Glamoflauge Heavy Duty Concealer w/Concealer Pencil in light - I haven't tried this yet but I've heard so many good things about it on other beauty blogs that I had to get it.

Lancome Paris Hypnose Volume Mascara in Brown - I had asked for black at the counter but they gave me brown by mistake and I can't return it : ( Oh well. This mascara is my favorite higher-end/department store mascara. I switch between using this and a drugstore brand (usually L'Oreal Voluminous) because it's quite expensive at $31 CDN. The other day someone asked me if I was wearing fake eyelashes and no one has EVER done that (unless I was wearing fake eyelashes) so it works well!

e.l.f. Angled Contour Brush - we don't have e.l.f. in Canada except some lone products that pop up here and there at Winners stores (Winners is like a T.J. Maxx) so I wanted to pick up a contour brush I didn't really need but wanted (story of my life!) and decided on e.l.f. because it was cheap and I've heard only good things about the brand. I haven't used it yet though...

Sonia Kashuk Full Volume Eyelashes with Glue - I bought these at Target (which we don't have yet in Canada) and can't wait to try them.

Cle de Peau Concealer in Ivory - okay, this concealer cost me $70.00! I have never in my life spent that much on one makeup product but celebrities love it and makeup artists swear by it and I need all the help I can get with my under-eye dark circles. I've been wanting to try this for a couple of years now. I'm trying to finish up my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer before I start using it. I'll let you know if it's worth the money!

Bumble and Bumble Defrizz - I wanted something to help smooth my fly-aways and frizzles after I straightened my hair in the morning so I picked this up at Sephora. This works perfectly and gives it a nice shine. I highly recommend it.

Wet 'N Wild Eye Shadow trio in Walking on Eggshells 380B - I bought two of these. They were $2.99 each at Walmart! I’m so impressed with Wet ‘n Wild eye shadows – they're highly pigmented and blend easily. With a primer, Wet 'N Wild eye shadow stays on all day and doesn't crease on me. And the colors are beautiful to boot ; ).

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know!

Natural Language from Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter: Music

Harry Potter: Music
                                                                               Daniel Radcliffe

Question: You're a major (major =big) music fan, aren't you?

Daniel Radclilffe: Huge.

Question:  Do you get to go to gigs?  (get to = able to, gigs = musical performances)

Dan: Not as much as I'd like to, but I'm seeing the Chilli Peppers (American music band) in Hyde Park. I'm going to that, very excited, because The Pixies (American music band) are supporting.

Question: So when did you come across The Pixies?

Dan: Um... I'm really ‘into’ films, obviously, as well, and I got Total Film (British Film magazine) and there was a compilation of soundtracks, and "Where is my mind?" was on there, because it's the soundtrack to Fight Club (1999 American film with Bradd Pitt and Edward Norton), and so I went out and bought Death to The Pixies: The Greatest Hits.

Speaking Style
Daniel or Dan’s speaking pattern is casual/informal for many reasons but I would like to focus on two expressions.  He uses the word Huge in his first answer and uses the word into in a slang style.

Question: You're a major (major =big) music fan, aren't you?

Dan:  Huge

When he uses the word ‘huge’, the meaning is ‘really really big music fan’.  Also he shortens his sentence for a faster talking style.

Longer speaking style:  “I am a 'huge' music fan.”

The shorter speaking style is used here because to a native English speaker we know there are more questions coming.  A detailed answer isn’t necessary.  Why? Because the interviewer uses a tag question: …, aren’t you?.
Now when we learn grammar this answer is not usually the best.

Question: You're a major music fan, aren't you?
Answer:   Yes, I am/No, I am not.

This is a common drill type question used in language classes to emphasize the grammar point.  It is a bit robotic if constantly used in conversation.

In a conversation tag questions are used like an exercise warm up or to get to know someone when talking to them for the first time.

However, even with such a short, simple question, Dan signals he wants to continue talking about music.  The answer ‘Huge’ doesn’t follow the yes/no grammar pattern.  Instead he answers emphasizing his excitement about music.  It doesn‘t sound disjointed to a native speaker because ‘Huge’ refers to the ‘major music fan’ idea of the interviewer’s question.  Dan’s natural answer helps link the ideas.   His enthusiasm/emphasis allows me to know that this is a good topic for him.  This speaking strategy is great for creating continued conversation.

The use of ‘into’ is a casual slang style.

Dan: I'm really ‘into’ films.  (to be into something/someone=to like
                                              or love something/someone)

Ex. Same sentence idea - Dan: I really like/love films.

'Into' is such a common word in English but the indirect meaning sometimes tricks us.

You can get some more ideas about how to use 'huge' and 'into' in the next part.

Try out in your daily conversation!

1.Question: You’re a major fan of rock n roll, aren’t you?
   Answer:  Huge

2.Question: Are you a huge fan of jazz?
Answer: Absolutely, I am really  into jazz fusion.

3. Question: Are you a major fan of baseball?
Answer:  Huge! I have been into it since my dad took me to my
first game when I was 6 years old.

White Night

dress - Kohl's (LC by Lauren Conrad), shoes - Target, clutch and necklace - H & M, ring - R.W. & Co.

Last Thursday evening I was invited to attend ‘White Night,’ a cocktail party and silent auction benefiting the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters at Edmonton City Centre downtown. The event took place on a pedway inside the centre and included a fashion show highlighting ECC’s fine retail stores followed by 9 one-of-a-kind dresses created by Edmonton’s hottest designers. They had to use white fabric and incorporate a white ribbon in their dress as a symbol of the fight against domestic violence. If you liked a dress you could bid on it in a silent auction! Here are some photo's from the event:

Andrew, Janis and Marketing Coordinator for Edmonton City Centre Kristin Reid

DJ's from Urban Metropolis spinning beats. Music makes everything better.

Beautiful white designs by the always-elegant Kelsey McIntyre (Serendipity), the innovative Nomin Gantumur (Handcuffs Required) and the unpredictable Cherie Howard who told me her unique creation was mummy-inspired.

This was my favorite dress of the evening, by designer Genette Salgado who dominated Western Canada Fashion Week with her Fall/Winter 2011 Evening Dress Collection last Spring. She didn't disappoint this time, either. The fabric, the cut and detailing of this garment was nothing short of stunning. Look at the back! I die.

I had to take a picture of Kristin in her dress. She got it at Value Village! (Value Village is a second-hand store here in Canada.) Doesn't she look cute? I love the nautical theme!

Rihanna

dress - Dots  jacket - H & M  sandals - Army & Navy  purse - Winners  pendant and ring - H & M

Happy Friday! This is what I wore Wednesday night to Rihanna’s concert in Edmonton. I wanted to dress up a little bit but at the same time be comfortable so I made sure I wore flats because I can't handle standing for three hours in high heels!  I went to the show with my best friend Kristin who got tickets for my birthday. Isn't she sweet? My birthday is actually in October so this was a reeeeally early gift!

Me & Kristin. My camera died right when I left the house (I was so mad!!)  so we took this with her I-Phone.

Rihanna was amazing, she was quite entertaining, to say the least. It was definitely "R" rated, like most female pop stars' acts are and there were a lot of young kids in the audience. I would never bring my (future) children to one of her shows because she is all about SEX and it can be a bit much, really inyourface. Her powerful voice is enough to captivate the audience, she doesn't have to whore it up on stage every second to get our attention. But sex sells I guess. And there was plenty of writhing, crotch-grabbing, S & M action and even an on-stage striptease (lying down) for a lucky guy plucked from the audience. RiRi sure doesn’t leave anything up to the imagination, I'll tell you that! We were in the fourth row on the floor so basically her crotch was right in front of our faces for most of the night. Like this:

I was waiting for it to formally introduce itself to the audience. I’m sure the guys ahead of us were in their glory. Her hips don't lie! The Real (drunk) Housewives of Edmonton who were sitting right in front of us seemed to enjoy Rhianna's sexy moves, too because at one point two of the ladies (probably in their forties) started making out. And the hammered girl next to Kristin kept yelling out, “Rihanna, you’re such a bitch! You bitch! Ha ha, I’m just kidding, I'm kidding! No I’m not, you’re a bitch! No, Rihanna, you’re not, I’m just kidding! Ha ha. Bitch.” (I think Kristin and I were the only sober ones there.) But even with all the craziness we had a great time. Rihanna (and her goodies) put on a fun show and we were in awe of talent. I’m just sorry I missed her epic fall on stage! I'm still waiting for that video to pop up on youtube. **** Update: Here's the video!

Have a great weekend!

Macy's Chicago: Brief Preview Picspam!

Oh yeah. It was this good:

Johnny looked gorgeous at his Macy's State Street appearance, and also was hilarious during his fashion-show commentary. Justin Bieber: Japanese crisis

Justin Bieber in Japan
                                                                       Justin Bieber
These days, natural disasters affect the global community.  It seems a ‘universal culture’ is becoming more of a reality.  In the past 10 years, I have had many friends and family affected by natural disasters.

When I started learning foreign languages, I was often unsure of what to say in times of difficulty or crisis.  The other day, I was happy to see Justin Bieber expressing his feelings toward Japan.

He uses a common expression to show concern:

“My prayers go out to them (the Japanese people).”
                                           Justin Bieber on Twitter

There can be two ideas about the expression:
1.In a religious sense, it means to ask a ‘higher power’ (God) to help the Japanese people.
2.In another sense, it means to hope/wish for something to happen to help the Japanese people.

However, either ideas show the speaker’s feeling toward a positive outcome to a bad situation.

The word 'prayer' is the common denominator in expressions of natural English during ‘times of hardship’.

Other Celebrity quotes for the Japanese people using the word  'prayer'.

*"I am sending all my love, prayers and support."*
                                                               Selena Gomez on Twitter

*"My prayers go out to anyone that is being effected by the disaster in Japan.”*

*"I'm sending my thoughts and prayers and love to those in Japan who are hurting."*

*"Our hearts and prayers are with all of our BSB family in Japan. We love you all so much.  Please try to stay safe. ... Kisses and hugs from us!"*

Life On and After 'The Bachelor' : An interview With Shawntel Newton from Brad's Season

Fans of the reality show ‘The Bachelor’ will remember Shawntel Newton as the gorgeous, down-to-earth, and fun-loving mortician who fell in love with Brad Womack last season. Unfortunately for viewers, this fan favorite was sent home after her hometown date with Brad which included a tour of her family’s funeral parlor. In the end he proposed to the Barbie-esque Emily Maynard. But it’s all good because Shawntel was too good for Brad any way! They all were. Below, the 25 year-old Chico, California native answers all my (very) random questions about the show and dishes on life in the Bachelor mansion, life after Brad Womack, Bachelor fashion and what she thinks of the infamous Bentley on this season of ‘The Bachelorette.’

You had never seen an episode of ‘The Bachelor’ before you went on the show. What did you expect when you got out of the limo that first night?
My two younger sisters thought it would be a great idea to sign me up for a dating show, and they were huge fans of 'The Bachelor', so the next thing I know I'm on a plane to LA to start filming. I had NO expectations getting out of that limo. I didn’t know who Brad was but I thought he looked good in a suit! I came out of that limo free-spirited and ready for anything and everything.

Shawntel with her sisters Destiny (left) and Vanessa

One of the things that made you stand out from the other girls was the fact that you have a very interesting job -you’re a funeral director. How do you separate your work from your life? Is it difficult not to take your work home with you when you deal with death on a daily basis?
This is a question I get asked a lot. In fact, the average funeral director burns out in 10 years because they were not able to separate themselves from work. Growing up in the business has helped me a lot. I have been around death all the time. It’s not that I am immune to death, but I have been able to learn early on how to professionally separate myself from the families I serve. A lot of people think that our job has to be easy, because all we do is work on the dead. This is so not true. We work with the survivors of the dead. I have a huge zest for life, and my family's like that…I help bring life to this work. There has been many times that I have cried with families or I have gone home thinking about what I saw, said or did at my work, but that’s healthy. It’s just not all the time…thank God!

Hometown date with Brad (on her embalming table)

What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you on the job?
There was this one time I was at the funeral home around 2 in the morning waiting for another employee to meet me so we could go on a removal. I was in the garage where our refrigeration unit is (and sometimes it makes noises). And of course, it made this loud thump noise and I FREAKED out. I didn’t even open the door to see what happened. The funny thing is I knew the refrigeration unit made noises. But that night I freaked myself out.

Your first one-on-one date with Brad may have been one of the best dates in Bachelor history because he took you on a freakin' SHOPPING SPREE in Vegas! What was that like? And do you still wear the clothes he bought you?
That was the best date EVER. I was literally in shock when Brad told me that I could have anything I wanted. I live in a small town, and our shopping is not the best. Some of the stores I never even heard of before but I pretended I knew. I do wear the clothes still, especially the shoes. I love shoes. A girl can never have enough shoes!

Shopping with Brad in Sin City

A lot of people that watch ‘The Bachelor/Bachelorette’ think it’s extremely edited and maybe even scripted. Some viewers (like the majority of my friends) think contestants are actually actors planted on the show to stir up drama to increase ratings. What is your take on this?
I think it’s a little bit of both. I will tell you that the drama that starts with the contestants is REAL. When you are stuck in a house with a ton of girls, and you are all going after the same guy…the claws will come out. I am so NOT a drama girl, so that’s why I was not seen as much in the beginning with all the drama. I stayed OUT! I don’t necessarily think that they “plant” actors on the show, but I think that they know who they can get to stir up some ruckus!

What did you girls do when you had spare time at the house?
We drank cocktails, sat by the pool, painted our nails and talked and talked and talked! We were filmed all day, every day.

How long are the rose ceremonies? I get the impression from past contestants that they drag on forever!
In the beginning the rose ceremonies are so long and very exhausting. But your adrenalin is so high and you are anxious that it helps with keeping you awake.

Totally random question: Were you allowed to talk to the camera operators while they were filming you or did you treat them like a fly on the wall?
You are not able to talk to the camera operators. We were to focus on our conversations with each other and of course, Brad.

Do you get to choose who you room with?
We didn’t get to choose who we roomed with, but it didn’t matter to me because I knew we weren’t going to be spending a lot of time in our rooms.

Who were you closest to in the house?
I came off the show with a best friend, Chantal. She and I not only shared the same name, but we just hit it off from the beginning.

Shawntel and Chantal

What is Michelle Money really like?
I really love Michelle. She and I got along very well. To be honest, I got along with most all of the girls. I didn’t let them interfere with me getting to know Brad. And I did that in a classy way. Michelle just is a sarcastic person, and it was taken the wrong way. She’s a beautiful mother.

Did you do your own makeup on the show or is there a makeup artist on hand?
We did our own make-up and hair.

How did you decide what to wear on the show? What were your favorite outfits?
This was really hard, because normally when you are going out on a date or with friends, you ask your girlfriends if you look good or not. In this case, I usually didn’t like to ask the girls if I looked cute, because they would probably lie! I went shopping in my girlfriend’s closets before I left for the show, and had plenty of dresses and cute outfits to pick from. My favorite dress was my yellow gown I wore out of the limo, and then my outfit I wore on the shopping spree in Vegas.

Shawntel in her yellow dress, goofing off with Brad and during one of the most dramatic rose ceremonies ever.

You totally kicked butt on the group stunt date. How do you stay in shape?
This date was SO fun. I just got into this mode of kick-butt time and got the lead role with Brad and was able to make-out with him…many times! I actually take kick-boxing lessons here in Chico. And I love it. It’s by far the best workout. Thank goodness I took those classes, because it came in handy that day!!!

 Making out with Womack
To see her in action click here

If I take up kick boxing can I look like this??

What are your favorite stores to shop at?
I love to online shop and lulus.com is one of my favorites. We have some fun boutiques here in Chico, like Urban Laundry, Ruby’s and Kreations.

What are three beauty products you can’t live without?
I love my Victoria Secret banana lip-gloss, mineral bronzer and my MAC eye shadow “honey.”

If you had been asked to be ‘The Bachelorette’ instead of Ashley this season would you have said yes?
Actually, I was asked to be the Bachelorette and I considered it. I was a little hesitant though and didn’t think I needed to be the Bachelorette to find my husband. I think they made the right choice with Ashley.

I have to ask: What do you think of the whole Ashley and Bentley situation? Did you want to dropkick him like I did while watching the episode when he left the show?
Heck yes! I wanted to dropkick Bentley. He is just a jerk! I have nothing to say about him aside from that he’s making a fool out of himself and I hate seeing a friend cry.

Who do you think Ashley will choose? (I'm hoping it's JP!)
I am really hoping Ashley picks JP, too. He’s my favorite for her. I am also loving, Ben F., Nick and Ames.

 JP (wooh!) & Bentley (boo!)

What was the best part of being on ‘The Bachelor’?
The best part of being on 'The Bachelor' was the adventures I was able to be a part of.

The worst?
The worst was watching it and noticing how I wore pajamas ALL the time. I was hardly ever dressed up. But I guess that’s just me ; ).

I understand you’re working on writing a book. Can you tell me a little bit about that?
I am and I am so excited about that. I have always wanted to write a book ever since I was in the funeral industry. So I think now is the time. I am working on an autobiography and it’s going to be based on my upbringing in the funeral industry.

What is life like after ‘The Bachelor?’ Are you dating?
A lot of doors have been opening up since I have been off the show. It’s an exciting time right now. I am not dating anyone. Like my grandmother always says, “he’ll come when you least expect it.”

I am somewhat amazed at the graffiti artist's
cheery sentiment, however, given that Johnny arrived

Bamboo Ballroom Blogger Night

blazer - Anne Klein (clothing swap), trousers - Cassis, t-shirt - Aeropostale,
scarf - Spring, shoes - Target, bag - Army & Navy, ring - H & M

Hey guys! I hope you're all having a good week. This is what I wore to a blogger event Wednesday night. The blazer I'm wearing is the same one I wore here, which I picked up at Over the Top Swap a couple of months ago. It's definitely one of my favorite pieces in my closet. My shoes are new, I got them from Target (of course!) on my vacation. I thought they were a great dupe for the Steve Madden and Brian Atwood versions I couldn't afford! It was my first time wearing them and my feet hurt so badly at the end of the night, I seriously thought I'd have to crawl to my car. I was thisclose to taking them off and walking barefoot down the street, risking contracting hepatitis. Even my eye balls hurt from wearing them. But anyways, enough complaining. On to the event!

Bamboo Ballroom, located on trendy Whyte Avenue in Edmonton is one of my favorite stores. If you live in the Edmonton area or if you ever come to visit you must check it out! And bring me with you! They carry amazing brands like Free People, Mink Pink, BB Dakota, Alternative Apparel, J Brand, William Rast (the list goes on) as well as local designer clothing from Suka and Cruz. And their jewelry and hair accessories are so unique. You can imagine how excited I was to attend their first ever Blogger Night.

Of course there was a ton of shopping involved! When you gather a bunch of fashion bloggers together in one store with gorgeous clothing and throw in some sweet discounts all hell breaks loose. In the best possible way. No one left empty handed! I picked up a couple of tops I'll be wearing in upcoming outfit posts so stay tuned for that!

The lovely Suki from Ponytails + Horseshoes was on hand to give the guests summer hair trend demos. "No more flat irons this season!" Suki says, "This summer it's all about waves and curls."

Here I am with the beautiful makeup artist Nicola Gavins, who applied a creamy pinky-nude lipstick on me and added some Becca shimmering skin perfector in Opal to give my cheeks a bit of shimmer.

Designer Alisha Schick and Bamboo Ballroom owners Kyla Kazeil and Stacey Boruk. (They spoiled us.) Accomplished Edmonton photographer Ashley Champagne (she shot Lady Gaga!) from Georgie magazine was also on hand but unfortunately I didn't get any photo's of her because she was too busy taking photos of us ; ).

Janis, Andrew and I at the end of an extremely fun night!

If you're a local blogger who missed out on this night don't worry, Kyla tells me another meet up is already in the works! Leave me your email address in the comment section below and I'll be sure to pass it on to her.

Have a great weekend!
