RCGP Chairman Clare Gerada moves to gag doctors on 'assisted dying'

I’ve had a flurry of correspondence recently from GPs expressing deep concern at RCGP Council Chair Clare Gerada’s recent move to shift the College to a neutral position on 'assisted dying'.

Dr Gerada’s latest newsletter devotes four paragraphs to the issue which she has placed on the agenda for the February 2013 meeting of the Royal College of General Practitioners’ governing body.

She has now published an editorial written ‘in a purely personal capacity’ in the December edition of the Journal of the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP) (£) which was mailed to members this week.

In it she argues that that:

‘all Royal Colleges and Medical, Nursing, and other, umbrella medical organisations should… take a neutral stance on the issue of assisted dying and should not be publicly opposed to or support any change in legislation that may allow assisted dying for terminally ill, mentally competent adults.’

Her conclusion is that:

‘Parliament, not the profession, must decide this issue, based on their experience, knowledge, wisdom, and taking into account the views of their constituents.’

Although she seems not to be an official member Gerada’s line is exactly that taken by the pressure group ‘Healthcare Professionals for Assisted Dying’, a subdivision of Dignity in Dying (the former Voluntary Euthanasia Society).

This group’s members deluged the British Medical Association’s Annual Representative meeting last June with a battery of almost identically worded motions seeking to move the doctors’ trade union to a similarly neutral position.

The move spectacularly failed but was supported prior to the meeting by a concerted campaign waged through the pages of the British Medical Journal by editor Fiona Godlee working in close cooperation with HPAD and DID.

Gerada has re-run most of the same arguments, without reminding readers of this recent history.

She quotes a controversial survey of GP opinion commissioned by Dignity in Dying and employs the ‘hard cases’ of Ann McPherson, founder of HPAD, and Tony Nicklinson, a severely disabled man who died recently after an unsuccessful high profile court case, as reasons to revisit the law.

She uses throughout her article the propaganda term ‘assisted dying’, a vague euphemism which was coined by DID and has no actual meaning in law, but which is widely accepted as a blanket term covering both euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Given that Nicklinson’s case was an attack on the law of murder (and not the Suicide Act) in so doing she implicitly includes within her remit euthanasia as well as assisted suicide.

Gerada refers to Lord Falconer’s highly controversial ‘commission on assisted dying’, which concluded that 'there is a strong case for providing the choice of assisted dying for terminally ill people', as ‘independent’ and mentions that she herself gave evidence to it.

What she neglects to tell us is that this ‘independent commission’ was conceived by Dignity in Dying, financed by one of its Patrons Terry Pratchett, chaired by Falconer himself who had previously tried to decriminalise assisted suicide in an amendment to the Coroners and Justice Bill in 2009 and composed of well recognised members of the pro-euthanasia lobby, with 11 of its 12 members having previous form.

She also neglects to tell us that 46 individuals and 40 organisations who were invited to give evidence to Falconer's commission refused to do so. These included the RCP, RCN, RCPsych and the BMA, who later passed a motion expressing concern about bias.

The pro-euthanasia lobby are well aware that one of the major barriers to legalising assisted suicide and/or euthanasia is the opposition of the medical profession to such a move. This is why they worked hard in 2005 to move the RCP, RCGP and BMA to a neutral position prior to the introduction of the Joffe Bill in 2006.

That bill was defeated and all three medical bodies were turned back to opposing any change in the law during 2005-6 after grassroots members expressed concern about the direction that their respective leaders were taking them.

Gerada will be well aware that in 2013 two new bills seeking to legalise assisted suicide will be coming before the House of Lords and Scottish Parliament respectively. She will also be well aware that the ‘Martin’ case, that of another patient with ‘locked in’ syndrome seeking doctors’ help to end his life, will come before the Court of Appeal.

Neutralising medical opposition ahead of these events is therefore an attractive campaigning option.

Gerada claims that doctors should only speak on areas ‘where we have an expertise that goes beyond that of the public; for example, advising on the necessary safeguards and codes of practice should any law be passed, and on matters such as assessing prognosis and setting guidelines for optimal end-of-life care.’

She argues that doctors ‘should be concerned with areas of regulation, monitoring, and establishing criteria for implementation of the law, not whether the law should happen or not.’

But in reality the specific insights that doctors have into difficulties of diagnosis and prognosis, into the question behind the question, into coercive confounders and the vulnerability of disabled, elderly and dying patients are very strong arguments against legalisation and the public does not have this same expertise. Doctors also, more than the general public, appreciate the political and managerial and pressures that could be brought to bear were assisted dying to become a cheap ‘therapeutic option’.

It is not therefore surprising that a clear majority of doctors have consistently opposed a change in the law on grounds that pressure would be placed on vulnerable people to end their lives and that we should rather be promoting good palliative care. Moreover the Hippocratic Oath itself contains the statement, ‘I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked nor provide such counsel’.

In view of these facts it seems extraordinary that the chairman of one of Britain’s leading medical bodies should be advising that doctors absent themselves from this crucial debate.

As those who would be administering the lethal prescriptions, and working in a system in which such an approach became yet another ‘option’ to be considered, doctors have not only a right, but even more a duty to be fully involved at the forefront of these discussions

Can we imagine someone in Gerada’s position suggesting that the health and Social Care Act, GP commissioning and the privatisation of the health service should be a matter for parliament only to decide? Why then assisted suicide and euthanasia?

Gerada’s neutrality approach got short shrift from the BMA last summer, and I suspect that once grassroots members get wind of it, it will get short shrift in the RCGP.

She is of course fully entitled to her personal opinions but many doctors would feel that she should not be using her influence as chairman to inflict these personal views on the governing body of the RCGP.

With the health service straining under the pressures of reorganisation and financial cuts and all the publicity around bad care and the neglect of elderly patients, one would have thought that there were far more important matters for the RCGP Council to consider than whether or not doctors should be helping to end their patients’ lives.

BISI IBIDAPO-OBE DROPS BABY GIRL

Top yoruba act, known by most as Olabisi Omo Logba logba, real name Bisi Ibidapo-Obe, has put to bed. The bouncing baby girl, came into the world today- early morning of November 30, 2012.  Place of birth is the prestigious Reddington  Hospital on Isaac John Street, Ikeja, Lagos. The healthy young babe, came in at about 10AM.

She was so elated when we called her to wish her well. And to show how strong and healthy she is, she was already on her way home when we chatted.

There had been a bit of controversy recently bothering on the paternity of the baby's dad, though Bisi had refused to agree to or even deny the person many claims is the baby's dad.

We are so happy for her and her daughter, her first child and we wish them well.

NOMINATING OMOTOLA JALADE EKEINDE AS THE SEXIEST ......

We think and that's our choice, that our very own Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde AKA Omo-T, should be amongst the sexiest women in the world. We are going to start a campaign that we hope, would get the attention of the editors at People's Magazine. There is the need for them to look outside America and Europe and point their binoculars or telescopes the way of Africa and Nigeria.

And we can bet, without any reservations whatsoever, that once they look unbiased, they'll definitely come to a major decision, that Omotola is one of the sexiest women alive. Not only is she a fantastic role interpreter (thespian or actress), she's also a gorgeous lady(mother of 4 & wife) to the boot. They don't always come around this often, with the full package like this.

We are happy to say, she is a full package. Or what do you all think?

CHRIS BROWN & BIG SEAN COVERS THE JANUARY 2013 EDITION OF XXXL MAGAZINE

Breezy has had many great things going for him this year. And it seems like the goodness would continue into the new year-2013. The young guy, who has been in the eye of the storm ever since his misdemeanor against Rihanna, has had it good and bad. But he still seems unstoppable. He and Big Sean are on the dual covers of the new XXL magazine, the December/January 2013 edition.

Chris Brown AKA Breezy had much explanations to make on various matters, check him vibe.

On his fight with Drake
“A lot of people wanna know about the whole situation with me, Drake and Meek Mill. At the end of the day, I’m me, they’re them. They rap, I sing. Totally different caliber. I rap, I play around on mixtapes. But our words don’t collide as much as you’d think.”

On his emotional growth
“I haven’t been as mature and thought out in the past, so, me growing now, it’s showing my progression. I used to use my Twitter account to vent, but now I mostly use it for marketing and promotions. Even if the media asks me something, if it’s cool then it’s, ‘What’s up?’ But if it’s anything that’s too negative, I don’t care to respond.”

On his feelings about love
“One thing people often want me to talk about is my public love life. When it comes to my love life, the perception seems as though I am a player. But that’s not true. Love is something I am still learning. It’s just an obstacle that I haven’t yet mastered. I think that’s my biggest hurdle in life.”

On his artwork
“I use music or painting as my outlet to get through the confusion. I try to promote positivity and love.”

GENERAL BUHARI 1ST DAUGHTER, ZULAIHATU HAS PASSED ON

The 40 year old first daughter of the former Presidential Aspirant of the CPC, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, has passed on. Zulaihatu, died at the Nasara Hospital in Marafa Estate, Kaduna after giving birth to a very healthy baby girl. Prior to this new baby girl, she's had 2 other kids- Amira & Mohammed.

She was born on December 5, 1972, meaning she passed away 7 days to her birthday and 19 days to her dad's 70th birthday, his own birthday is on Dec 17. Incidentally, her younger sibling- Halima is preparing for her wedding on December 22, only for this very sad occurrence. Her death is said to be connected to complications from sickle cell, which she suffers from.

May her lovely soul rest in peace.

KADUNA GET SET FOR VP SAMBO & GENERAL BUHARI

Kaduna State in the North of Nigeria in December is going to be in the news. Reason why is because, in that month that ends the year, the gorgeous daughters of these eminent Nigerians (VP Namadi Sambo & General M. Buhari) would be getting married to their heartthrobs.

The Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria's daughter, would be getting married in a ceremony, that we hear would kick-off from Wednesday, December 5, 2012 and as it is usual in the Northern part of Nigeria, the ceremony would last through the week till the weekend. So the Sambo's (the VP & his wife Amina) would play host to many dignitaries from all over Nigeria, who would definitely converge in Kaduna to celebrate with the VP's family.

Not too long after in the same month of December, on the 22nd of the month to be precise, all things being equal, the former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, Rtd, would play host to many Nigerians from far and near, as his gorgeous daughter, Halima would be getting married. The wedding fatiha would also hold in Kaduna, just like the VP daughter's own and we hear it would last for 7 days. We expect that it would be another gathering of Nigeria's who is who at both weddings. General M. Buhari, was the presidential candidate of the CPC (Congress for Progressive Change) at the last election.

While the VP is from Kaduna and was formerly the Governor of the State, General Buhari on the other hand is from Katsina, but lives in Kaduna. Interestingly, the General would be clocking 70, on December 17, 2012, so that means a double-pronged celebration for the family.

We wish them well. Just as we were about publishing this post, we just heard that General Buhari's first daughter, Zulai 40, has passed on. She died on Thursday, November 29, 2012 after delivering a baby at the Nasara Hospital, Marafa Estate in Kaduna. She left behind her new born baby girl and 2 other kids- Amira & Mohammed. May the Soul of the dearly departed rest in peace. We don't now know, if this would affect the dates of the upcoming wedding ceremony.

VICE PRESIDENT MOHAMMED NAMADI SAMBO

GENERAL MUHAMMADU BUHARI

Talk show hostess with the 'mostess', the pneumatically endowed Wendy Williams, known by most for her talk show, went to totally nude for a purpose recently.

She's the latest celeb/star removing their clothes in protest against the use of fur.  In PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) new campaign, the TV star was not shy in anyway to tell the world- I'D rather go Naked than wear FUR. Wendy for PETA. Except for her strategically placed hair covering her glorious asset, she was totally nude.

Check her out.

It's Life

Since I'm a bit behind on blog posts this week I thought I'd fill in the space with some instagram pics from the last month or so of my life. That's what I tend to do when I don't have anything else to post about, if you haven't noticed! So here they are. Clockwise starting from top left:

1. D. and I went to our friends' wedding in Canmore last month. It was a beautiful wedding! The couple didn't get married in this church, they got married in the country but isn't this church adorable?
2. This is where you'll find me most week nights during the winter - on the couch in my Bigfoot slippers with some tea or hot chocolate. I have a very exciting social life.
3. The view from my office window at work. Although I really don't like the cold, the snow is absolutely beautiful, don't you think?
4. I found myself on the U.S. Netflix in a show called 'Fear Itself' that I filmed yearrrrrrs ago! (To see a clip, click here but it's VERY DISTURBING, FYI.)

1. All bundled up to face the cold outside.Wearing a hat from Zara.
2. Lunch at The Next Act, my favorite restaurant/pub.
3. Kitty!
4. Wearing my new purse from Top Shop (click here for the full outfit.)

1. I was part of a fun thrifting challenge in The Edmonton Journal. You can read the article here.
2. Caroline, Janis and I at the Amor/Suka Spring 2013 launch party at The Bamboo Ballroom.
3. My friend sent this pic of me she took in the LRT station downtown.
