WCFW Day 6: The Collections

My friend Daniel and I   dress - Kensie from Etzio, tights - Zara, boots - Spring  belt - Zellers

Another fabulous night of fashion! I don't want Western Canada Fashion Week to end! I'll think I'll go through withdrawl when it does. Here are some photos from Tuesday night and highlights from the collections that were shown that day.

Stylish Edmontonians Miranda Lorentz and Brittany Gora
The gorgeous Stacy and Rowena from A Pleasury Of ... getting ready to blog throughout the show

Day 6 of WCFW opened with Highgrade Clothing's presentation of Japanese Fashion Designer Yohji Yamamoto's Y-3 S/S 2011 ready-to-wear collection.  His line was sharp, chic and sporty. The cute shorts and tees we saw on the runway had me yearning for warmer weather. (Or at least for the snow to melt!)

Lisa Marie Sciroli's S/S 2011 "Charmed" collection featured colorful, fun and flirty dresses and skirts. I love how she used real women as her models and showed off their beautiful curves with her feminine and wearable clothing. Pssst! That's blogger Kastles in the middle strutting the runway. She rocked it!

Talented Designer Genette Salgado's F/W 2011 exquisite dress collection titled "Baby, Whatcha Gonna Do With Your Life?" literally took the audience's breath away. You could hear people gasping in their seats (including mine) as her statuesque models strutted down the runway one by one in her elegantly detailed and carefully crafted impeccable designs. It was my favorite collection of the night and I didn't want her show to end! I have a feeling Genette is going to take the Canadian fashion industry by storm! She's a rising star you'll definitely want to keep your eye on. To read my interview with this up-and-coming designer click here.

The always-theatrical Rebecka Pichoch showed off her latest collection called "Secrets." The majority of the models wore masks covering their mouths and at the end of the show Rebecka herself came on stage in what appeared to be a gas mask which I didn't quite understand. But my favorite piece from her showcase was the funky and sleek Lady Ga Ga'esque black dress you see above, right.

Tressa Heckbert was the last designer of the night to show off her collection  for her contemporary "Sessa" clothing line which caters to both men and women. We saw earthy colored fabrics, lots of drapery, a little bit of layering, crisp, clean lines and Frida Kahlo-like uni-brows on all of the models. Overall it was an impressive show and I look forward to seeing what Tressa comes up with for her next collection!

WCFW Day 5: Fantasy Hair & Makeup, Collections + a Life Update

Hair and Makeup by Cora Whitford (and yes, those are real piercings!)

Western Canada Fashion Week's impressive Salon Showcase on Sunday was followed by a night of Fantasy Hair & Make-up, an exciting performance by Firefly Theatre and beautiful new collections by Elise Truong and Natasha Lazarovic on Monday.

Cora Whitford showed off her amazing hair and makeup skills with her dark, avant-garde show. The models reminded me of characters you would see in a Tim Burton film. A very sexy Tim Burton film! Rated X.

Entry in the Fantasy Hair & Makeup Competition

Winners for the Fantasy Hair Competition: 3rd place - Olivia Tascone, 2nd place - Lindsay DeChamplain, 1st place - Rebecka Pichoch. Fantasy Makeup Competition: 3rd place - Cora Whitford (red creation), 2nd place - Cora Whitford (black creation), 1st place - Kim Peterson. Congratulations to all!

Three aerialists from Firefly Theatre took the stage after intermission to perform a breathtaking number that wowed the audience.

The cutest corsets I ever did see. From Sweet Carousel Corsetry & Apparel by Elise Truong. These models were saucy, sassy and full of personality which was a nice change compared to the stone-faced models that usually rock the runway.

My favorite show so far: Temna Fialka's "Malena" collection by Natasha Lazarovic. Inspired by her Romanian and Ukrainian heritage, Natasha captivated the audience with her gorgeously detailed, colorful, ethnic dresses and her creative and unique headpieces.

Kassandra, who won tickets to WCFW via my Twitter contest, and her husband Aaron at the show, sitting front row. How cute are they??

Life Update: The past few days have been a whirlwind! As you know, I've been covering Western Canada Fashion Week and if I'm not working, sleeping or eating I'm madly downloading photos and blogging! I've been extremely busy but I'm having such an amazing experience so far watching all the shows, speaking with the designers, meeting and befriending other bloggers and being submerged in all things fashion which I absolutely love! I hope to catch up on your blogs once fashion week ends and I have more spare time. I also hope to post my one-year blog anniversary giveaway within the next few days so stay tuned for that!

I hope you're all having a good week so far!

WCFW Salon Showcase - Day 4

EC Creative Team

Extremely talented local hair stylists showed off their unique 'do's to a packed house at Western Canada Fashion Week Sunday night. The Eveline Charles Creative Team – my favorite of the evening - had their male models strutting down the runway in white skivvies and socks while the ladies walked barefoot wearing lingerie in neutral shades. You’d think the clothing (or lack thereof) would be distracting but it actually wasn’t, I was able to focus on the hair. Kind of ; ).

Interview With Emerging Contemporary Designer Genette Salgado

photography by Amanda Diaz
Model: Autumn Allen for Mode Models
Hair: Ponytails & Horseshoes

One of the shows I'm most excited about seeing during Western Canada Fashion week and one that has been generating a lot of buzz is Genette Salgado's F/W 2011 evening dress collection which premieres at the Transalta Arts Barns Tuesday March 29th. Described as "part rocker, part pin-up, part girl next door," Genette's designs are edgy and sophisticated and downright stunning. I had the opportunity to interview the Cebu, Philippines-born designer who is sure to impress at fashion week.

1. The collection you'll be showing at Western Canada Fashion Week tomorrow night is called "Baby, Whatcha Gonna Do With Your Life?" What was your inspiration for the name?

I usually look to song lyrics for my collection titles. It can be pretty difficult to find that one liner that encompasses the mood, the inspiration, my personal thoughts, etc. and sometimes it comes from the most random and unexpected song like this one did. “Baby, Whatcha Gonna Do With Your Life?”  suited the collection perfectly as it parallels my inspiration of evening soirees of the upper crust during the Edwardian Era with my current position of not knowing what my next moves will be. Everything’s up in air and it’s a matter of figuring out what will come after.

2. What is the best part of fashion week for you?

The few days leading up to the show. It’s exciting to see things finally come together. All the work and time and energy put in in the months before come to fruition and it’s a great feeling.

3. What is the worst part?

The few days leading up to the show. As exciting as it is, it’s also a bit frantic, and stressful, and I second guess or doubt myself. It’s all part of the process.

4. Do you find it difficult being a clothing designer in Canada ?

I’m still fairly new in the industry but I have found it to be quite challenging. I was unable to obtain a paid design position after graduating which is why I decided to work on my own designs on top of interning with several designers for more hands-on experience. I was also very fortunate to have interned in NYC this past summer and the opportunities, the experiences, and the energy and support surrounding fashion were things I’ve unfortunately, never felt in Canada – to that degree anyways.

5. How do you come up with your creations? Do you have a specific process? Who or what are your influences?

I find inspiration in a variety of things from pop culture to history to art to my own personal experiences, and everything in between. The process I take to come up with a collection takes a bit of time and a lot of ground work from researching my chosen inspiration and direction, to rough sketches, to painted illustrations. And all that before I even start drafting and creating muslins (or prototypes of the garments).

6. What was it like interning for Obakki?

It was an interesting experience as I was doing more office work and organizing as opposed to more hands-on tasks like cutting fabric or creating surface details – responsibilities I had at other internships. But I did get to see the other side of the business - not just the design part which was great. I also became friends with a couple of amazing people, one of whom is now a freelance publicist in NYC.

7.  You took the fashion design program at Blanche MacDonald's Centre for Applied Design. Do you think aspiring designers need to go to school to be successful at their craft?

I think for any artist to be successful in their craft, one should continuously be in a learning environment whether that be in a school setting or an internship or mentorship. It’s also important to surround yourself with like-minded individuals. For me personally, attending Blanche Macdonald was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. At Blanche I learned the foundation for making fashion design a career – everything else, I learned from other designers, other friends/artists, from business people. I think that once we stop learning, we stop living.

8. Are you living in Edmonton or Vancouver at the moment? Where can we buy your clothes?

I’m in Edmonton for the time being. I’m not selling anywhere as of yet but I hope to either sell consignment or online in the next few weeks.

9. What's next for you?

There’s nothing definite... I’m exploring options in the States and possibly in the UK but wherever I end up, I still plan on designing and creating garments under my label.
