Last night I attended Day 6 of Western Canada Fashion Week and while creating this post I strongly felt I needed to give credit where credit is due right from the start, which is why I'm highlighting Malorie Urbanovitch's Spring/Summer 2012 collection first. I was lucky enough to view this Edmonton-based designer's stunning line from the front row and it was flawless.
I mean, look at these clothes! The high-quality fabric, the dynamic colors mixed with neutrals, the structured design and streamlined aesthetic literally took my breath away.
Did I mention this designer is only 24??
Congratulations to Malorie for executing such a strikingly chic (and wearable) collection!
Another young designer who impressed me last night was 23 year-old Janessa Ott with her Obsidian line. She featured vintage-inspired coats and dresses that reminded me of elegant and luxurious fashion from the '30's and '40's. Janessa chose a theme and ran with it, which resulted in beautifully-crafted, classic clothing.
I also thoroughly enjoyed Playa Bonita's adorable beachwear line, as did all the men in the audience whose jaws dropped as gorgeous women of all shapes and sizes paraded down the runway in fun and flirty swimwear.
Fashion Magazine's Caroline Gault, me (with a new hair style courtesy of Justine at Flaunt salon) and Janis from Dress Me Dearly. We just all happened to be wearing red nail polish that night!
A very stylish Edmontonian I had to take a picture of. Loved her studded boots!
Two of the most talented photographers in town: Harvey Miedreich and Aaron Pederson who must have called each other before the show to plan out their outfits ; ). Actually it was a total coincidence. Or so they say...

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE SUPERNATURAL OR THE UNEXPLAINED?
THE LOCH NESS MONSTER, GHOSTS, LEPRECHAUNS, UFO’S, BIGFOOT AND YETI, VAMPIRES AND WEREWOLVES?……..HOW ABOUT ALIENS?
This is always a fun topic and thematically universal to all cultures! These days you probably can’t find a newspaper, magazine, TV show, or at least one movie a year that has been affected by this theme! Harry potter, Supernatural, Twilight, Urban Legends, Sanctuary, True Blood, Horror movies involving the supernatural, the list goes on and on! The supernatural theme is universal but the magic, excitement, intrigue, unknown, and the scariness is in the details! The details are great conversation topics whether talking about yourself, a movie, or a TV Show! And don’t forget, Halloween is this month in North America!
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki of
the TV Show Supernatural
Question 1: Do you believe in the supernatural?
Jensen Ackles Answer 1:I’m not easily scared and I’m rather rational, but the more I work on the series the more I’m sensitive to strange stories I hear about. I wouldn’t say I believe in ghosts, but I keep an open mind.
Question 2: Do you believe in supernatural or aliens?
Jared Padalecki Answer 2: Yes. Personally, I’ve never had any paranormal experience or seen aliens, but the universe is big and I can’t believe we’re alone. I’m sure there are a lot of supernatural things that we have no clue about…(have no clue about = we really don’t know about)
Both Jensen and Jared express their viewpoints with casual English. Jensen is the NO case and Jared is the YES case. However, the language they use isn’t strong. They are both open to other ideas. They start with their personal feelings/thoughts ‘believe or not believe’ and then diplomatically reveal that they are open to other ideas, thoughts, or opinions. Both emphasize that the world or universe is bigger than they are. The speaking style has gone from a microcosm to a macrocosm. Quite smooth! Being open to other people’s ideas is a KEY to great communication!
Speaking Style
I have simplified their speaking styles for clarity but the core of their speaking styles remains the same.
NO CASE
Question 1: Do you believe in the supernatural?
Answer 1: I am not __________ and I’m rather __________. I wouldn’t say I believe in __________, but I keep an open mind.

2. I am not really a believer and I am rather skeptical. I wouldn’t say I believe in Aliens, but I keep an open mind.
YES CASE
Question 2: Do you believe in the supernatural?
Answer 2: Yes. Personally, I have never had __________, but the __________ big. I’m sure there are a __________ we have no clue about…
Examples Answers:
3. Yes. Personally, I have never had any ghost encounters, but the world is big. I’m sure there are a lot of things we have no clue about…
4. Yes. Personally, I have never had a Bigfoot or Yeti encounter, but the Rocky Mountains and Himalayas are big. I am sure there are creatures we have no clue about…

Saturday and Sunday night were Day 3 and 4 of Western Canada Fashion Week. We've been experiencing a welcomed Indian Summer here in Edmonton so the weather was just beautiful this weekend. I wish it would last so we could skip the -30 degree winter altogether. (Wishful thinking.) I decided to wear my T by Alexander Wang maxi Saturday night to keep me cool and comfy. This dress is the most comfortable piece of clothing I own, I would totally sleep in it if it wouldn't wrinkle!
Here are some of my favorite looks I spotted on Day 3 of WCFW:
This pup stole the show during the showcase sponsored by Mini Edmonton!
And here are some highlights from Day 4:
Mode Models owned the runway in clothing from West Edmonton Mall
The cards the models are holding have the name of the store that the clothing they're wearing came from. (If you're wondering.) Unfortunately I couldn't see them very well. That or I was too busy paying attention to the male models to notice them at all.
Every season Western Canada Fashion Week gives local hair salons a fantastic opportunity to show off their talent and creativity with the Salon Showcase. A student at the Eveline Charles Academy styled this adorable 'do.
This hair "masterpiece" is courtesy of the uber-talented professional creative team at Eveline Charles. The models wore garments made out of garbage bags! Very unique. I should mention that a proud Eveline Charles was actually in the audience that night!
Black Swan
Ricci Hair impressed the audience with their theatrical and spectacular creations titled "Modern Queens."
Look closely. Do you see the little cross sticking out of the top of the model's hair??
I hope you all had a fantastic weekend! I'm actually enjoying an extended weekend because I took three much-needed days off from work this week. I need to catch up on my sleep! And use up some of my vacation time. Although the next few days will be anything but a vacation for me with fashion week shows to attend and other exciting things going on in my life right now. Will fill you in soon : ). Have a great week!

A beautiful, vibrant fall dress from one of my fabulous sponsors, Bamboo Ballroom : )
Lance Chung and Brittanee Tomkow, last season's Emerging Stylist Contest winners showed off their sophisticated creations. They could only use pieces they found at Goodwill, a thrift store. Every thing you see styled is second-hand.
Cutie patooties Lance and Brittanee. They did a remarkable job!
Last season's Emerging Designer Competition winner Andrea De Ocampo presented the audience with her very first collection. I was impressed with her clothing, to say the least! This was my favorite design of hers. I'm a sucker for faux fur and clean lines.
Oh, and did I mention Andrea is only SEVENTEEN?? Not bad for a high schooler! When I was 17 I sewed through my finger in Home Economics class and had to go to the medi-clinic to get a tetanus shot! Her fashion designing future certainly seems brighter than mine did at her age! FYI: That was the same year I sewed seams vertically through the middle of a shirt, front and back instead of the sides.

On Monday I had the pleasure of visiting Edmonton-based designer Derek Jagodzinsky's cozy (and unusually organized!) downtown studio on 104th St. to get a sneak peak of his versatile S/S 2012 collection he'll be showing at Western Canada Fashion Week. Titled 'Lady-Like Luxx', Derek's line features "strong, tailored, sculptural separates that take a woman to work, night or play with interchangeable blazers, skirts, pants and dresses. It's about every day dressing for women who want to look professional and effortlessly chic in the workplace or anywhere life takes them."

The back of this top is as cool as Derek's hair, don't you think? ; )
Derek, who is not only a clothing designer but also works as a graphic designer and professional photographer says he is inspired by people, places and things but doesn't have a specific 'theme' when it comes to designing a collection. "For me, it's not about themes," he states, "It's about beautiful clothing that is ready-to-wear. I make real clothes for real women." Sweet and simple.
Derek has only been designing by himself for two years but looking at these beautifully crafted garments you would think he's been making clothes for much longer than that. "Well, I worked with designers before I started designing for myself and learned about the fashion business before venturing out on my own. I have always LOVED fashion ever since I can remember and always wanted to be a fashion designer." Derek has already had Thread Hill pick up his F/W 2011 line and when I ask the 27 year-old designer where he sees himself in five years he tells me, "I see myself selling across Canada and some parts of the USA and the UK and really building my brand." I have no doubt in my mind this talented and driven designer will do just that!

I just had to take a photograph of his cool jewelry!
The bracelet is from Winners and the ring was designed by Sandra Sing Fernandes.
Lady-Like by Luxx will be shown on Wednesday September 28th at WCFW. You can get your tickets hereorrrrrrr follow me on Twitter and Facebook for daily ticket giveaways!
