Grey Cup

Yesterday was the Canadian Football League's Grey Cup which is Canada's version of the Superbowl and this year it was held in my hometown which was quite exciting. The city was filled with crazy football fans and there were tons of fun parties and events people could attend all weekend. I wore this to a Grey Cup party my cousin had last night at her house. We all stuffed ourselves with way too many snacks and appy's as we watched the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Montreal Alouette's. (Montreal won.) The actual game was played outside in -5 degrees celsius and I kept thinking, "Wow, we Canadians really are crazy." We'll watch football games in the snow when it's freezing outside. We're hardcore.

I also saw the movie 'Burlesque,' which I told you about on Friday. I really enjoyed it! I was afraid Christina Aguilera's performance would be similar to Britney Spears' in 'Crossroads' but luckily Christina can actually act and carve herself a character. She's a force to be reckoned with, that one. She was amazing, especially when she used those pipes! The storyline was a bit cliche: struggling and naive young woman moves to L.A. to find fame and in doing so finds herself, overcomes obstacles, falls in love, etc. but whatever I still thought it was great. I give it an 8 out of 10. Did anyone else see it this weekend? What did you think? And what did you think of Cam Gigandet's abs? Holy Moly : o

Just a reminder: if you haven't entered my Urban Decay/MAC/OPI giveaway you can enter it here. Contest closes tomorrow night and the winner will be announced on Wednesday! Good luck!

Makeup Haul

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
These are the makeup products I purchased over the past two weeks, well most of it was bought last night during a trip after work to the mall which is dangerously close to my house I might add. I would never buy this much makeup normally but I only paid about $23.00 for all of this because I used my Sephora gift cards that I got for my birthday last month (who loves gift cards? I do!) and the cosmetics I didn't get from Sephora were drugstore brands and weren't expensive. I haven't tried any of these yet (except the Revlon palette) but I hope to do some reviews for you all in the near future. Here's what I picked up:

Nars Blush in 'Orgasm'
I've heard so many great things about this blush but I've never tried it before.
Actually I'm a Nars Virgin! Not for long though ; ) Dont' worry, I'll use protection:

L'Oreal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base
It's basically a primer that's supposed to smooth lines, hide pores and banish imperfections. I got it for $15.00 at the drugstore which isn't too bad. I usually use MAC primer but I wanted to try something a bit less expensive. Plus the glamorous L'Oreal commercial with Linda Evangelista suckered me into buying it!

Revlon Illuminance Cream Shadow in #730 Skinlights
I'm not impressed so far. First, because every time I've tried to open the palette I chip a nail, it's so hard to get into! And then I swear. More than once. Secondly, the colors are beautiful but the shadows tend to cake on the lid and the colors don't blend into one another very easily. I'm going to try it with Urban Decay's primer (below) to see if that makes a difference...

Benefit Boi-ing Industrial Strength Concealer in 01, Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion
Givenchy PLAY for her
I usually use Benefit's Erase Paste for concealer -which I LOVE- but I decided to try Boi-ing, also by Benefit, just to see which one is better suited for my skin and my dark under-eye cirlces I've been cursed with. I also wanted to try UD's Primer Potion because I've heard umpteen times how amazing it is from other beauty bloggers. Oh, and I was given a sample of Givenchy PLAY For Her while I was at Sephora and it's a lovely perfume. Sorry, that's the only word I can use to describe it: Lovely. It's a bit too floral and in-your-face for me though. Still, I'll use it up. (Hey, it was free!)

Have any of you tried any of these products? What should I expect?

I hope you all have a great weekend! Tonight I'm going to see:

I haven't been this excited to see a movie since Sex and the City 2! Here's hoping Burlesque doesn't disappoint like SATC did.

Winter Inspiration

photos via people, fashiongonerogue, zara lookbook, true north style

It's heeeeere. Winter, that is. In my neck of the woods any way. The cons: icy roads, -30 degree temperatures (already, I kid you not!), having to start my car ten minutes before I want to go anywhere, people driving 30 km an hour which takes you twice as long to get anywhere, not wanting to venture outside because the cold air literally takes your breath away, going to work in the dark and coming home from work in the dark, frozen fingers and toes that feel like they'll fall off at any minute, runny noses. The Pro's: CHRISTMAS, rich hot chocolate overflowing with whipped cream topping, cuddling, staying in bed all day because it's too cozy to get out of, snow ball fights, gingerbread scented candles, holiday baking, reading a good book next to the fireplace and the Fashion of course - chunky knits, cozy cardigans, shearling, sexy thigh high boots, faux fur collars, camel-colored capes, I could go on and on. Oh, and snuggling up to this little stinker:

Prints Whiskerson Sultenfuss The First (but we call her "Kitty")

I'm actually surprised that I'm feeling little bit optimistic about Winter having arrived. I haven't cursed Mother Nature like I usually do when it snows and the mercury dips way too low. (Seriously, you wouldn't believe just how cold it gets where I live.) I have to admit the fresh snow draped over the trees is extremely beautiful and I love coming home after a long day at work and wrapping myself in a warm blanket with a cup of tea and watching a movie with D. Plus Christmas is my favorite time of the year and it's just around the corner. There's something about Winter that is kind of comforting to me.

I hope you're all having a great week! We're halfway to the weekend!!

Fashion Emergency

Yesterday, my cousin Lisa from San Fransisco who had just flown in Saturday morning called me at 7:30 a.m. and told me United Airlines lost her luggage and she had nothing to wear for her niece's Confirmation that day. I considered this to be a "MFE". That's Major Fashion Emergency. She asked if I could accompany to the mall and help her find a suitable outfit. The catch: we only had about an hour and she could only spend $200.00 which United Airlines agreed to compensate her with. (It was the least they could do.) This is what I wore for Mission: Find Lisa Some Clothes. I purchased the coat from Old Navy at half price which ended up being $60.00. The hat, boots and purse you've seen before, you're probably sick of seeing them over and over again, I'm sorry, I promise to switch things up a bit! Anyways, back to our crisis: Lisa and I shopped like our lives depended on it and found some nice-fitting trousers, a beautiful pink sweater and booties from Aldo for $210.00 (only ten bucks over our budget which isn't bad) in record time. Crisis averted. Luggage was found and will be here today! Hopefully. Fingers crossed. Or we may have another "situation" on our hands.

Payless Shoes 2010 Holiday Collection

Christmas is expensive. I don't know about you but I have to save my money a few months prior to the holiday season to purchase gifts for friends and family. Not only that, there are a ton of Christmas parties, get-togethers, open houses, open bars (yes!), cocktail hours, holiday work functions, etc. that I have to attend around this time of year and I usually end up spending money that wasn't in my budget on a new dress (or two but who's counting?) so I don't end up wearing the same outfit on Christmas Eve that I did in 2007. And with a new dress you need nice shoes to match, right??? Of course right! Well luckily for me (and you) Payless Shoes has teamed up with three amazing designers - Christian Sariano (from Project Runway), Lela Rose and Isabel Toledo - to bring you affordable, gorgeous shoes that won't put a strain on your wallet. Prices start at $34.99 and don't exceed $59.99 USD. Canadians will be able to purchase them in limited stores around the country. Unfortunately the only store in Alberta that carries this collection is the West Edmonton Mall location. Did I mention I live in Edmonton? : )  : )  : ) Besides the bad-ass buckled 'Mena' black bootie in the above picture (named after Christian Sariano's friend and muse, actress Mena Suvari) I also have my eye on these babies:

Lela Rose Perlita Bow Quarter Strap Sandal. I should mention this comes in black, too!

Isabel Toledo Toreador Pump.

To see the full collection, which includes accessories as well, you can click here.

I hope you all have a great weekend! Besides venturing out for a couple of dinners this weekend I will be staying inside under a blanket, sipping blueberry tea and watching movies because it's fricken cold in this deep freeze I live in! Plus I think I should avoid the icy roads. I slid straight through an intersection yesterday morning once the traffic light turned red and stopped right in the middle of the road. I stayed there for a couple of seconds contemplating what I should do. Awkward. I ended up going through the red light. I pray I don't get a ticket in the mail!

Did you see Gwyneth Paltrow perform on 'Glee' last night? What did you think? I think the girl can groove! Who knew she could sing like that?! I was so impressed! Edible Fashion

         source: tedsabarese.com

Before Lady Gaga's infamous (and absolutely disgustingred meat dress at this year's VMA's, there was a little project in early 2009 called "Hunger Pains," shot by talented photographer Ted Sabarese where 15 designers were challenged to make clothing out of food that each model was craving that day. (Eat that, Gaga!) My favorite is the artichoke dress in the first pic. Apparently it took the designers six hours to attach each leaf! Talk about "hunger pains." I wonder if the models were allowed to eat themselves out of their wardrobe? If I was one of them I'd be covered in popcorn, BBQ Frito Hoops and Twizzlers ;). What about you?

I hope you're all having a great week! It snowed yesterday. Yeah, I'm not too happy about that. I swear in a past life I lived in California or Hawaii because these cold Canadian Winters don't suit me at ALL. Thank the heavens for car starters : ).

Brunch

Yesterday I woke up craving carbs. French toast to be exact. So D. and I went for a late brunch at a restaurant a few blocks away from our house. This is what I wore. Unfortunately it started raining as soon as we stepped outside (boo) so we quickly took some pics and were on our way. I'm trying to get a lot of use out of this jacket because I know it's just a matter of days when I'll have to switch to a warmer Winter coat and put this baby away in my closet to hibernate until the Spring. Anyways, during brunch I had three huge, delicious pieces of french toast topped with fresh strawberries, icing sugar and loads of maple syrup and I ate it ALL. With a smile on my face. Except tonight I'm going to Yoga ; ).

I hope you all had a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend! Has anyone started their Christmas shopping yet? I plan to this week!

I hope you all had a good Remembrance/Veteran's Day today and I hope you were all able to take some time out of your day to honor and reflect upon our country's fallen soldiers and the men and women who are still fighting in Afghanistan today. Unfortunately I sometimes take my freedom for granted, do you? But fortunately I don't know anything different, I've lived in a free country my whole life which makes me extremely lucky and I tend to forget that.

Anyways, this is what I wore this afternoon when I met up with a friend of mine to see the movie "Morning Glory" with Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford and one of my favorite actresses, Diane Keaton. Too bad the movie sucked. Ok, it didn't suck but I got so tired of watching Harrison Ford play such a cranky, one-dimensional, selfish asshole throughout the whole damn movie I wanted to walk out. Basically he played himself throughout the whole film. Did anyone see him on Letterman or Leno (I can't remember which one!) a few years ago when he acted like a disinterested, egotistical prick? That's what he was like in "Morning Glory." Not my cup of tea. So I'll go back to talking about my outfit ; ).

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Here's a close-up of the boots I'm wearing. I used a gift card I received on my birthday last month to buy these suckers that caught my eye at Spring last week. It was love at first sight. They are surprisingly comfortable! When I told D. this he looked at me sideways with his eyebrows raised and said he didn't believe me but they really are super, super comfy. And they have good grips on the bottom which will be very useful in Winter when I'm literally walking on ice - they'll prevent me from falling flat on my face! Speaking of Winter, ughhhhh it's just around the corner. I've had to scrape frost off my windows of my car every day this week! Grrrrrr.

Well I hope you all have a great weekend! Annnnd if you haven't entered my AWESOME (that's A-W-E-S-O-M-E) Urban Decay/MAC/OPI/Sephora Giveaway you can enter it here!

A Good Base

A few of my readers have asked me what makeup products I use to make my skin look "flawless" and if I have a secret that I'd like to share. Although I don't think my skin ever looks "flawless" (but gosh thanks so much for the compliments!) I do my best to take care of it and don't skimp on quality skincare products, primers, concealers or foundations for my face which gives my skin the illusion of being flawless. And I guess my "secret" isn't really a secret: it all starts with a good base. And lots of products! (For me anyway. It takes work, ladies!) Here are the makeup products I'm currently using daily before I apply all the fun stuff like eye shadow, blush, lipstick, etc.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
1. In the morning before I put on my "face" (like my Mother used to say) I slather on Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with SPF 45. I always use a moisturizer that has an SPF of at least 30 to protect my skin from the sun's harmful rays, even if the only time I'm outside is walking to and from my car to and from work ; ) Which is usually in the Winter. When it's minus 30 degrees celsius outside and I'm freezing my arse off. I wait a couple of minutes to let it sink in. (The moisturizer.)

2. I then apply Smashbox Photo Finish Targeted Pore & Line Primer around my eyes to erase "imperfections" (don't we all have these?) like the damn fine lines I am starting to develop around the eye area (Boo!) It helps prevent concealer from sinking into said lines and making them more pronounced. I just started using it a couple of months ago and I love it.

3. Right now I'm using MAC Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage for my face before I apply my foundation. It goes on nice and smooth and minimizes my pores. I don't wear it all the time, only when I know I'm going to be photographed, like for this blog : }

4. Next I use Benefit Erase Paste to cover up my dark under-eye circles. (And I have VERY dark circles, seriously, people ask me if I'm sick when I don't wear concealer which is hardly ever!) It gives great coverage, I highly recommend it.

5. I use Revlon Colorstay Foundation with SPF 6 in 240 Medium Beige for my face. I find it's just as good as MAC's Studio Fix Fluid Foundation and lasts much longer. You can read more about that here.

6. I finish off with MAC Studio Fix Powder in C2 which sets my foundation quite nicely. Then I apply the rest of my makeup.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I took these photos before I left for work; my makeup is quite minimal during the week. I used:
  • on my eyes - MAC Velvet Eye Shadow in Vanilla, Covergirl Eye Enhancer in Shimmering Onix (crease), The Body Shop Liquid Eyeliner in Black and Lancome Hypnose Drama in Excessive Black
  • cheeks - Josie Maran Blush in Passion
  • lips - Lancome Le Lipstique Lip Coloring Stick in Charme, Blistex chapstick and Lancome Color Design Cream Lipstick in Love It
As you all know you can definitely make your skin look healthier and more beautiful with the right makeup (makeup = magic, am I right?) but I think more importantly the way you take care of your skin obviously plays a HUGE factor in achieving a nice complexion. That's a whole other post and I don't want to bombard you today so if you guys want me to share with you what kinds of skincare products I use please let me know in the comment section below. Also, I'd love to hear how you guys prepare your skin for make-up.

Oh, and speaking of MAKEUP, have you entered my Urban Decay/MAC/Sephora/OPI Giveaway?

I hope you're all having a great week! I get the day off tomorrow in honor of Remembrance Day so I'm only working 4 days this week. Woot, woot!

Well, the good people at ABC certainly know how to annoy us beyond belief with their stubborn reluctance to admit the obvious already WTF people keep us in suspense, don't they? Fun Friday Post Is Fun

Well, now we know this much:
