Speaking Style

Britney is describing her friends and how they affect her when she is with them.  

Britney introduces her idea with a statement.  In this case, ‘funny‘ can mean ‘interesting’.  The statement: “It’s funny how…” is a common, natural expression.  It is rhetorical in this case.  For a good conversation style, when you use a statement you should follow with example ideas to give the listener more details and support the initial statement. This signals to the listener that you are comfortable with the topic and want to continue talking about it.  Also, you are signaling that you want to share some more personal information about yourself.  This helps to create ‘intimacy’/’closeness’.  As people share intimacy or deeper feelings, the conversation can move toward a deeper understanding of one another. 

Personally, if I was talking to Britney ‘one-to-one’ I would ask her some more questions about her friends and then tell her about my friends.  With both people sharing, two-way (intimate) communication is achieved.  Moreover, sharing of information about your friends helps gain trust between people.  It is trust that allows people to feel more comfortable talking to you! 

Detailed answers, mutual sharing of information, and creating a sense of trust will aid in people sharing and talking about more DETAILED/COMPLICATED LANGUAGE TOPICS!

3. Also to note: ‘My cousin’ can be changed to ‘My sister’, ‘My brother’, etc.

Angelina Jolie: A long-term Relationship Partner

Speaking Style

Today’s theme continues from last week’s Blog about the type of guy or girl we would date; or wouldn’t date.  Last week was about dating preferences.  This week’s language focus is similar but used when we are talking about being with someone more permanently. To refresh your memory here is last week’s conversational speaking pattern:

Avril: Boys with guitars  …they’re really fucking hot.  I could never date a preppy guy. 

Avril gives us her ‘likes’ and ‘dislikes’ regarding guys.  This gives us lots of information to continue talking to her. For example we might answer, “Yeah, I love guys with guitars too.  There awesome!” or “ No way.  I love preppy guys.  I think they are more mature.”

In today’s natural language focus, Angelina shares with us the type of man she would like to be with in a future long-term relationship.  The language she uses is very subtle and casual:

Angelina: The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be __________.

The expression ‘the kind of man’ is common and casual.  The sentence: “ I could be with one day would have to be…” is a possible future that almost has a fairy tale feeling to it.   The next part of her language emphasizes her ideal man for a long-term relationship:

"… an amazing father, a compassionate, strong, independent individual.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today."

As you can see, Angelina’s passion comes out in the use of several adjectives and then the secondary sentence. The adjectives are descriptive but precise and the secondary sentence shows how she wants to be affected by her next partner in a direct way.  Angelina wants a great father for her son, and a compassionate, strong, independent man in her life.  Moreover, this person must be all of these things in order to affect her to become a better person. 

Angelina’s language pattern flows so nicely.  Her passion and ideas are propelled clearly without sounding arrogant.  She allows us to see past the outside beauty and into the sensitive but intelligent, beautiful person inside her.  This is the type of language that attracts a great partner to the beginning of a wonderful relationship.  Angelina’s language has that female X-factor or irresistible magnetism that parallels her physical traits. 

Now, to bring out your own personal magnetism…or catch guys like Brad Pitt or anybody else you want!

Angelina’s Conversational Speaking Pattern

Some examples to get you started:

1. The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be strong but sensitive.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today.

2. The kind of man I could be with one day would have to be intelligent, funny, and love dogs.  I want somebody who understands me.

3. The kind of woman I could be with one day would have to be strong, independent, and loving.  I want somebody who demands I be better than what I am today.

4. The kind of woman I could be with one day would have to be intelligent, warm, and a cat lover.  I want someone who is also my best friend.

Natural Language from Sharon Stone: Cosmetics

Sharon Stone:  Dior makes the best lip-glosses going.  I'm nuts 

                          about them, especially the clear one with the silver 

                          sparkles.

Sharon’s English sounds natural and casual for two reasons: 

1. Her use of ’going’ (Although the use of ‘going” at the end of a sentence is not common in a textbook, it is perfectly natural).  It is easier to understand the idea of ‘going’ if the sentence is lengthened. 

For example,

Dior makes the best lip-glosses going in the market.  (going = selling)

‘Going’ has the idea of ‘selling’ in this case.  Sharon has shortened her sentence because the idea is clear to a native speaker.  Also, in a more formal English situation, I wouldn’t use ‘going’.  Instead I would use the direct word ‘selling’.

2.Another reason Sharon’s language feels casual/informal is because she uses the common expression ‘nuts about’ (to be nuts about something/someone = to really like or love something/someone).  This casual expression using a simple food name has been around a long time in the English language.  It probably sounds a bit weird but it’s a very common expression for all ages of North Americans.  Try not to think to deeply about the image/idea or you will go nuts (to go nuts = to go crazy = to become crazy). 

 Here is Sharon’s language pattern for your next expanded conversation style:

I’m nuts about them, especially the ______________.

Here are some examples to get you started:

1.Maybelline makes the best concealers going.  I’m nuts about them, especially the one with 2-in-1 concealer and highlighter.

2.Olay makes the best anti-aging products going.  I’m nuts about them, especially the one for night time recovery.

3.M.A.C. makes the best lipsticks going.  I’m nuts about them, especially the one for Surfers.

Natural Language from Jennifer Aniston: Movies

Question:  What sort of films do you watch?

                  

Jennifer Aniston:  I love old movies and I still watch classics 
                            like Wuthering Heights.

 (Note: Wuthering Heights is an old black-and-white film from 1939)

 

Jennifer’s speaking pattern is casual/informal because of the use of ‘and’ to connect two complete sentences.   For a native speaker, the linking of the two complete sentences with ‘and’ feels smooth, casual, and common. 

Another reason her English sounds natural/casual is because she uses ‘like’ to mean example (like = example in this case).  This use of ‘like’ is common in conversation. 

Jennifer’s speaking strategy is great for creating conversation. I know it is a good idea to continue talking about this subject with her.  It is a subject she likes to talk about. 

Why do I feel this way?

 

Jennifer uses the word ‘love’.  Also, Jennifer tells us a category ‘old movies’ and an example ‘Wuthering Heights’.  Many people who are not good at conversation give one word answers or very short answers.  For example:

Question:  What sort of films do you watch?

Answer:    Old movies.

                  

When a native speaker hears this style they might think that the person doesn’t want to about this topic.  They may also feel that the person doesn’t want to talk to them.

So, for me, Jennifer gives me signals to ask another movie question or continue talking about classic movies.

I hope you will give this style a try in your next conversation.  Here is Jennifer’s language pattern for you to expand your conversation style:

 Jennifer Anniston: I love old movies and I still watch classics like 

                                  Wuthering Heights.

                I love __________ and I still _________ like ________.

Here are some examples to help you out if it is a bit difficult.

Examples:

I love science fiction movies and I still watch classics like Star Wars.            

I love action movies and I still watch classics like Indiana Jones.

I love romantic films and I still watch classics like Ghost and Pretty Woman.

So, even with simple English we can make an interesting and natural conversation.  I hope you will try it in your daily life.
